OWL - Online Writing Lab (Purdue University)

This writing resource has been growing since 1995 when they started OWL - it is packed with great stuff!  Most of this is geared toward college level non-fiction, however a lot of the general advice can be applied to any type of writing.  Using the navigation on the right-hand side of the page you can quickly get to detailed expert advice walking you through the entire writing process.

This is a strong resource for young writers and one of the few on the web that is honestly for YOUNG writers.  Scroll down to get to the good stuff.  You'll find a number of spell checkers and direct access to solid resources for editing, essays, and style.  Parents and teachers will also appreciate the detailed 'Projects' and 'Worksheet' sections.

A Plus Research & Writing (TeenSpace)

TeenSpace at Internet Public Library [www.ipl.org] has put together a very effective step-by-step, 6-part approach to writing a research paper.  From "Getting Started" to "Writing the Paper" this site is a good resource for high school and college students tasked with writing a research paper.  Includes great advice on organizing, researching, citing, and writing your research paper.

Visual Thesaurus (Think Map)

"Type a word into the text box and click "look it up"!"  Really.  That's all it takes to dive into Think Map's Visual Thesaurus.  From there, this amazing reference technology presents you with a living (or so it seems) map of your word.  See a visual presentation of antonyms, synonyms and easy explaination of what they all mean.  Along the right-hand side of the window NOUNS / ADJECTIVES / VERBS / ADVERBS are categorized and defined.

This is a FANTASTIC family of websites.  Using the text box at the top of any page you can quickly get a definition, check the correct pronunciation of a word, get a nice list of antonyms and synonyms, and just about anything else you would want to do with a word.  Results are well organized and linked wiki-style for easy navigation.  Daily features include word-of-the-day, crosswords, and other wordsmith interests.
